Sources & Measurement Standards
Primary references used for units and measurement guidance.
International System of Units
The BIPM SI Brochure defines the international measurement system, including prefixes such as milli, micro and nano. The NIST SI prefix reference supplies scale relationships.
Volume conversions
The NIST SI Volume page documents relationships such as 1 mL = 1 cm³ and 1,000 mL = 1 L. The NIST conversion-factor appendix gives US/Imperial units and precise conversion factors.
Kitchen equivalencies
The NIST Metric Kitchen Equivalencies provide rounded practical kitchen measures. Rounded kitchen figures are not the same as precise legal/customary-unit definitions. The FDA household equivalency guidance supplies additional reference context for labels.
Medicine and safety
The FDA guide to measuring liquid medicines recommends appropriate dosing tools and warns against ordinary household spoons. Our calculators do not select medicine doses.
Ingredient density caveats
Density presets are convenience estimates in g/mL. Because brands, temperature, and how powders are packed change mass per unit volume, the site does not present these kitchen estimates as a NIST-certified food-density database. For repeatability, use a calibrated scale and a density appropriate to your material.
